I tested Mous Optimal Travel Backpack as I want to ditch my suitcase on wheels (2025)

I’ve been testing the Mous Optimal Travel Backpack that the firm rightfully calls a 'game-changing alternative to rolling luggage.'

It is ideal for a techie or someone who works on the go. That’s because it comes with 25 useful pockets and compartments that make it much easier to find your passport, keys or water bottle than it is when you are using a suitcase on wheels.

Dragging a suitcase on wheels around a city can be a noisy and uncomfortable experience for you and passers by. Wearing a securely strapped-on backpack is quieter and altogether safer way to navigate new terrain.

The Mous brand has a decent reputation as a tech accessories company focused on creating protective and stylish products, particularly phone cases, backpacks, and accessories such as wireless chargers and screen protectors.

The first thing you’ll notice about the backpack is how sturdy and robust it looks and feels. Its exterior is crafted from 840D ballistic nylon, a material renowned for its durability and resistance to abrasion. It comes with a waterproof coating.

Inside the backpack is AiroFoam padding that protects fragile tech from bumps and falls. There is also a soft but strong 210D lining that adds an extra layer of protection.

There are lockable, water-resistant YKK zippers that provide added security, and the reinforced stitching will ensure this backpack can handle the demands of long-haul adventures.

It’s ideal for air travel as it is compliant with guidelines for cabin baggage from most airlines such as Aer Lingus and Ryanair. You won't fit it under your seat as a personal item, but it slots nicely into an overhead locker, taking up the same space as a small 10kg suitcase on wheels.

The main body of the backpack has a huge 40 litre capacity, which increases to 45 litres when the bag is fully extended. That means it is much bigger than most standard backpacks. But it is surprisingly comfortable even when fully packed.

You have padding on the rear, while the sternum strap and load-lifter straps offer additional support so your shoulders aren't taking the entire load. You also have the option to put away the straps and lift the bag like a holdall, which is really handy if you're only carrying it a small distance.

The wraparound zip allows you to open the backpack like a clamshell, rather than having to rummage through your belongings. What I love is the main compartment is sealed off from the tech section. This means you can keep any liquids or toiletries far removed from your cables and laptop.

On top of all the slots and pockets for your cables, computers, an iPad, keyboard, travel mouse, Kindle, headphones and cameras, you can also avail of a range of handy optional modular accessories that Mous has crafted especially for this backpack.

There is a self-explanatory Document Pouch, Tech Pouch (ideal for charging bricks and adapters for foreign countries), a water-resistant Toiletry Pouch and a fantastic Compression Wardrobe to keep your clothes fresh. I’m a fan of all four extras but the latter is the most highly recommended if you are going anywhere for a few days. It’s essentially a temporary wardrobe that you can take out and hang up wherever you are staying.

Verdict

The Optimal Travel Backpack is so ultra-versatile and protective and comfortable to carry it is unreal. You can keep your life well organised when on the go, whether for work or play.
